The United Nations established International Women's Day in 1977 to celebrate the rights of women and international peace. However, its history stretches back to the early 1900s, when women's organizations used the day to rally support for their causes: from the universal suffrage movement to the protest of poor working condition.

Women’s History Month provides an opportunity to understand, recognize, appreciate and highlight the unique contributions of women and issues that have impacted the world. In 1987, Congress declared the month of March Women’s History Month to recognize these contributions and to promote the teaching of women's history.
